What is a coated stent?
To help prevent restenosis, drug-coated stents (also called
"drug-eluting" stents) have been developed. Drug-coated stents provide
the same structural support as standard (uncoated) stents, but they also have
a drug applied to them. The drug is designed to release slowly at the right
dosage over time, helping to prevent restenosis by helping to keep the artery
open. The procedure for implanting an uncoated or coated stent is the same as
that for angioplasty - lasting about 30 to 90 minutes.
Drug-coated stents are not appropriate for every patient with coronary artery disease. Your doctor can advise you if you are a good candidate for this treatment option.
