Glossary

Angina.
Pain or discomfort in the chest due to reduced blood flow and oxygen to the heart.

Angiogram.
Special X-ray test that indicates the number, exact location and extent of narrowed or blocked coronary arteries.

Angioplasty.
Non-surgical medical procedure in which a specially designed balloon catheter is used to open a narrowed or blocked artery.

Atherosclerosis.
Disease process describing the buildup of a waxy substance called plaque on the inside of arteries.

Catheterisation.
Procedure in which a thin, hollow tube (catheter) is inserted into an artery for the purposes of visualizing the heart and blood vessels as well as diagnosing and treating heart disease.

Coronary Arteries.
Blood vessels immediately outside the heart that feed this vital organ oxygen-filled blood.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG).
Common surgical procedure to create an alternate route around a narrowed or blocked coronary artery using grafted vessels from the chest or leg.

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG).
Medical diagnostic test in which several electronic sensors are placed on your body to monitor electrical activity associated with the heartbeat.

Myocardial infarction (MI).
Damage or death to an area of your heart muscle resulting from reduced or blocked blood supply.

Plaque.
A waxy build up of fatty deposits that may form on the inner lining of your arteries. These deposits may reduce blood flow to vital organs.

Restenosis.
Re-narrowing of the artery at the site of angioplasty or stenting due to the overgrowth of normal scar.

Stenosis.
Narrowing of the arteries due to the build up of plaque on artery walls. This may result in reduced blood flow to vital organs.
